On the day following the ceremony, the people who were due to leave the city commenced their new journeys. The scientists modeled different temperatures and water abundances that may have been present in the Moon-birthing disk. At higher temperatures, their disk was primarily composed of silicate vapor, which formed as a result of evaporation of the mantles of both the proto-Earth and the doomed Theia. The disk at these higher temperatures also contained a relatively small quantity of hydrogen dissociated from water. In contrast, at lower temperatures, their disk was primarily composed of water, from which hydrogen did not dissociate under this cooler temperature range--thus making its escape mechanism very inefficient.
"The growing evidence for water inside the Moon suggest that water did somehow survive, or that it was brought in shortly after the impact by asteroids or comets before the Moon had completely solidified," explained Dr. Li in the July 24, 2017 Brown University Press Release. "The exact origin of water in the lunar interior is still a big question," he added.
Earlier research had determined the quantity of material accreted onto the ancient Earth following the Moon-forming collision. These previous calculations were based on how the siderophile or "iron-loving" elements such as platinum and iridium show a strong tendency to wander down into our planet's core. Following each giant impact that the primordial Earth experienced, these elements would have leached from Earth's mantle and bonded with iron-rich, heavy material that was destined to travel down, down, down into our planet's heart.
