In order to shed new light on the mysterious origins of the surviving duo of Martian moons, the researchers conducting this study combined their expertise in astrophysics, planetary science, computer science, and mathematics in order to create complex supercomputer models. The models ran a range of hydrodynamic and numerical simulations able to recreate the sequence of ancient events. Their findings strengthen the hypothesis that a horrific blast in the past formed the moons of Mars--originally a collection of moons and moonlets.



To help solve this mystery, Dr. Jacobson and his team devised supercomputer simulations of the growth of our Solar System's inner quartet of rocky, terrestrial planets out of the protoplanetary accretion disk swirling around our young Sun, from which the planetary building blocks, the planetesimals, eventually formed.



Icy moons and tumbling, gleaming moonlets dance around within the lovely and very famous rings of the gas-giant planet Saturn. A study released in November 2012 now suggests that most of the moons inhabiting our own Solar System were born from ancient, primordial Saturn-like ring systems that swirled around newborn planets circling the young Sun.
