Looking inward from Triton, there are seven regular moons, all of which display prograde orbits in planes that are situated close to Neptune's equitorial plane, and some of these small moons orbit within Neptune's rings. It is thought that these seven small moons were re-accreted from the rubble ring that formed after Neptune snared Triton. This would have occurred some time after Triton's orbit had become circular. In addition, Neptune is circled by six more outer irregular moons other than Triton, including Nereid, whose orbits are considerably farther from Neptune and at high inclination: A trio of these moons sport prograde orbits, while the remainder have retrograde orbits. Indeed, Nereid has an unusually close and eccentric orbit for an irregular moon. This suggests that Nereid may have once been a regular moon that was badly disturbed and nudged into its current position when Triton was snared by Neptune's gravity. The duo of outermost Neptunian irregular moons, Psamathe and Neso, have the largest orbits of any natural satellites known in our Solar System to date.

In a mysterious region beyond the orbit of the beautiful, banded, blue ice-giant planet Neptune--the most distant of the eight major planets from our Sun--there is a dark and frigid domain called the Kuiper Belt. Within this remote region, where our Sun shines with only a weak fire, and appears to be merely a particularly large star suspended in the black sky, a multitude of strange, icy worldlets tumble around our Star. Pluto, a large icy denizen inhabiting the Kuiper Belt, was originally classified as the ninth major planet from our Sun after its discovery in 1930. However, with the realization that this frozen "oddball" is really only one of several large, icy inhabitants of the Kuiper Belt, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) found it necessary to formally define "planet" in 2006--and poor Pluto was unceremoniously ousted from the pantheon of major planets. Pluto, now freshly reclassified as a dwarf planet, nonetheless remains a small world of great interest, debate, and affection. Scientists will soon learn much more about this beloved, distant, ice-ball so far away, when, after a treacherous nine-year journey of three million miles through interplanetary space, NASA's hearty New Horizons spacecraft arrives at Pluto on July 14, 2015.

The beautiful, banded, blue ice-giant planet, Neptune, is the furthest major planet from the Sun. It is also orbited by a very weird large moon that may not have been born a moon at all. The moon, Triton, is about 1,680 miles in diameter, and sports features that eerily resemble those found on the dwarf planet Pluto. Pluto is a denizen of the Kuiper Belt. The Kuiper Belt is a reservoir of comets and other icy bodies--some large, some small--that circle around our Sun beyond the orbit of Neptune, at a distance of about 30 to 55 Astronomical Units (AU) from our Star. One AU is equal to the average distance of Earth from the Sun--approximately 93,000,000 miles.



Images of Europa taken by Galileo in 1997 provide some important evidence suggesting that Europa may be slushy just beneath its glistening cracked icy crust--and possibly even warmer at greater depths. This evidence includes an oddly shallow impact crater, chunky-looking textured blocks of surface material that tantalizingly resemble icebergs on Earth, and openings in the surface where new icy crust appears to have formed between continent-sized plates of ice.



Although Theia made the ultimate sacrifice, it did not die in vain because this unfortunate world's demise made life possible on Earth. Earth's Moon makes our planet livable; it moderates Earth's wobble on its axis, resulting in a relatively stable, life-sustaining climate, and it also causes ocean tides that create a rhythm that has guided humanity for thousands of years.
