Earth's bewitching large Moon was probably born as the result of an immense impact, when a Mars-size protoplanet named Theia smashed into Earth about 4.5 billion years ago. This cataclysmic collision is thought to have hurled a vast amount of Earth-stuff and Theia-stuff into orbit around our ancient planet. Debris from the two unfortunate bodies gradually accumulated to give birth to our Moon, as tumbling little newborn moonlets crashed into one another and melded together into one large object.

Dr. Alice Le Gall commented in the same JPL Press Release that "Before Cassini, we expected to find that Ligeia Mare would be mostly made up of ethane, which is produced in abundance in the atmosphere when sunlight breaks methane molecules apart. Instead, this sea is predominantly made of pure methane." Dr. Le Gall, a Cassini radar team associate, is of the French research laboratory LATMOS, in Paris, and lead author of the new study.



There are several potential explanations that could account for the sea's composition of pure methane, Dr. Le Gall added. "Either Ligeia Mare is replenished by fresh methane rainfall, or something is removing ethane from it. It is possible that the ethane ends up in the undersea crust, or that it somehow flows into the adjacent sea, Kraken Mare, but that will require further investigation," she noted.



The discovery that the hidden interior of Earth's Moon contains water raises some interesting questions concerning lunar formation. Most planetary scientists think that our Moon was born from the debris left behind after the catastrophic collision of our primordial planet with the tragedy that was Theia. This collision would have occurred very early in our Solar System's history. However, one of the reasons scientists had proposed that the lunar interior should be dry is that it is unlikely that the hydrogen necessary to create water could have survived following the ferocious heat of that ancient impact.
